Ever since day one, back in 2015, we’ve always been about drinkability and deliciousness. Wines of purity, flavour, balance and purpose - served with a twist.
Our young winemaking team, spearheaded by Matt Large, is driven to explore otherness through new regions, different varieties and experimental winemaking styles. Each time they ask the simple questions, 'are we passionate about this place? Does this grape excite us? Can we have fun with it?'. That’s the guidebook to The Other Wine Co. Some of them are classics, some of them are mavericks; all of them make sense to us.
We proudly make these wines at Shaw + Smith, in our beautiful Adelaide Hills home in Balhannah. We’ve got some brilliant kit and some super creative minds to work with. You can rest assured we're forever on the lookout for something new - thirsty for any opportunity to push texture and chase freshness. You don’t try, you don’t learn.
And so we welcome you here to our home on the web. We want you to enjoy your visit, and if you’d like to chat to us about anything give us a shout. As much as we love drinking these wines, they only exist for you to enjoy, be that at home, or in a restaurant or bar. We hope they embody The Other Wine Co. spirit of adventure and pursuit to be other.
Matt is an intuitive winemaker, always seeking to create precise and sensitive wines that clearly express a sense of place, while employing best-practice sustainable viticulture. Prior to joining Shaw + Smith, Matt was Assistant Winemaker and Vineyard Manager at Shadowfax Winery, across their Macedon Range sites.
Matt also has a keen interest in Piedmont and Nebbiolo, and in 2017, worked vintage at Figli Luigi Oddero in La Morra. This is a tradition he's since continued, now making wines from there under his own label, Praeter. Matt has a thoughtful approach to winemaking, is closely in tune with viticulture, and is embracing the philosophy at Shaw + Smith of making wines that reflect our unique sites and climate.
